In 2001, Powdertech were the first company in the UK to install the latest European Chrome-free pre-treatment technology, based on Titanium / Zirconium technology.
Powdertech has three different immersion chrome-free processes:
Gardobond X4707: pre-treatment / primer for powder coating of aluminium. Meets the performance requirements of BS6496 / EN12206 / Qualicoat / GSB and is an alternative to older trivalent/hexavalent chrome based processes.
Gardobond TP 10413: Modified version of X4707 developed for the automotive industry. Applies an extremely thin Cr-free film to aluminium components for adhesive bonding or welding, resulting in a more consistent surface than mill finish aluminium.
Keronite: Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process for aluminium or magnesium components, offering superior corrosion protection.
Major automotive manufacturers are striving to reduce weight in vehicles for reasons of improved handling and increased fuel consumption without compromising safety.
The European Commission will ban, or at least severely restrict, the use of certain heavy metals - Mercury, Lead, Cadmium and Chromium, due to the possibility of landfill site contamination.
Powdertech is unique in having the ability to offer the automotive industry a range of chrome free processes that are designed to process light weight magnesium / aluminium components and allow manufacturers to meet any imposed chrome per vehicle limit, without compromising quality.
Clients that are currently using these processes are Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, Lotus Cars, Hydro Automotive UK.
